The BCAIA was formed for students, faculty and alumni with an interest in Greater China to join together in an organized effort to benefit UC Berkeley by, among other things, supporting the Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies, supporting UC Berkeley programs domestically and in Greater China, facilitating academic, cultural and business exchanges between UC Berkeley and organizations in Greater China, and providing mentorship and career development opportunities for students and alumni of UC Berkeley.

Prof. Bob Knight met CAL Alumni in Shanghai

CAL Alumni Club of Shanghai Gathered to welcome Prof. Knight at May 17, 2005

Robert Knight, one of Berkeley's top faculty & Professor of Neuroscience, Psychology and Neurology and Director of Berkeley's Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, paid a very brief, yet extremely fruitful and interesting visit to China’s most vigorous city –Shanghai during May 14-18, 2005. Prof. Knight's visit to Shanghai was being coordinated by the Institute of Neurosciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Knight appeared at a gathering of CAL Alumni, sponsored by Prof. Binglin Tan, President of CAL Alumni Club of Shanghai in his honor on the evening May 17. He gave a 30-minute talk to introduce his research program and answered audience questions. All present felt greatly honored and benefited a lot by Prof. Knight’s talks. Even though most of Cal Alumni present was in engineering; nevertheless, the topic was quite interesting and the presentation was well received. “Some of the neuroscience research is related to pattern recognition and data mining which our company are doing. I hope to keep in touch with Prof. Knight in the future.” Dr. Michael Xuan, Director of Hua Analytical Technology Co., Ltd and who received his PhD from Department of Mathematics, UC Berkeley in 1990, said.

Brief lecture-tour to University of Shanghai for Science and Technology

Professor Knight also paid a brief lecture-tour to the Theoretical Linguistics Research Center, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) as guest invited by Prof. He Gang, another Berkeley alumnus from Philosophy Department, in the afternoon of May 17. He gave a very enlightening lecture with Power Point illustrations on Aphasia—a language-related neurological issue. His lecture was very vivid and easy to understand, and was enthusiastically attended by graduate and undergraduate students as well as faculty members of the College of Foreign Languages, USST.

After the lecture, Prof. Knight toured the beautiful USST campus and was treated to a brief and beautiful dinner hosted by Prof. Luule, Dean of FLC, and USST.

BCAIA hosts dinner for Fudan EMBA

On October 28th, 2004 BCAIA hosted a dinner with Fudan and JiaoTong alumni associations for a delegation of Executive MBA visitors from Fudan University.

Visit to Berkeley- Sep 1st 2004

BCAIA took an active role in arranging Shanghai Jiaotong University visit to UC Berkeley. In May BCAIA President Robert Wu and wife Li-chun brought some proposals from Dean Newton of COE, Dean Campbell from Haas School of Business, and acting Dean Berring from Boalt Law school, to Chinese universities to explore the possibility of collaboration between universities of two countries. Following the initial contact, a delegation led by Chairwoman of the University Council, Madame Ma Dexiu scheduled a whole day visit to UC Berkeley on their way back home on Sept. 1. University Relation office arranged College of Engineering and Haas School of Business including MOT and SIMS for their visit. Robert Wu and Li-chun, BCAIA board member Sandy Chau and Sean Yao , Berkeley alumnus and Chairman for Jiaotung University Silicon Valley accompanied the delegation. BCAIA sister organization, BCSSA President Chungji Qian arranged graduate students to help out during different part of the visit. BCAIA VP Zhu Lei accompanied three visitors to meet with graduate's students that are interested in SJTU's present and future prospects in response to their recruiting session.



The delegation spent a whole day at the campus. They started from visiting two research laboratories of College of Engineering: Berkeley Wireless Research Center, where next generation wireless technology are designed and Microfabrication Laboratory, a graduate students laboratory supported by grants from university researchers, and industries who pay fee to lease the state-of-the-art facility that can make cmos silicon chip from beginning to the end.
